Rutilated/Phantom Quartz Teardrop Pendant

This large rutilated/phantom quartz cabochon is a clear white with needle-like rutiles running through it and the lovely silvery phantom crystals in the lower two thirds of the stone. Unusual to see one this large that isn't so thick border wrapping is an impossibility. I used seven lengths of sterling wire to wrap this stone, then gave it my signature topper with a twist. Note the decorative pulled wire detail.

Treat someone special to this one-of-a-kind gift or buy it for yourself.

The pendant measures 2 3/8" from top of bail and is 7/8" wide.

Note: Rutilated quartz is a combination of clear or smokey quartz, a silicon dioxide mineral with a hardness of 7, with inclusions of rutile, a titanium oxide mineral (with a hardness of 6 to 6.5). The rutile inclusions usually look like fine metallic hairs or needles, and they can be gold, silver or copper colored as in this particular stone. The quartz can occur in massive form or in prismatic crystals. Most rutilated quartz comes from Brazil or Madagascar.

Phantom quartz crystal shapes can sometimes be seen in the interior of quartz crystals, outlining an earlier stage of the crystal's formation. These phantoms are usually composed of other minerals such as chlorite, goethite or hematite or are composed of other varieties of quartz such as milky quartz, smoky quartz or even amethyst, which form on most or all of the surfaces of the quartz crystal at a particular point in time during its growth, after which the quartz crystal resumes its crystallization enclosing the phantom crystal outline within itself.

Metaphysically, rutilated quartz is said to activate the higher mind. Rutiles of a reddish color are said to assist in directing light energy to remove blockages in the body.
