Purple Onyx Druzy Pendant

This onyx is a lovely shade of cabernet purple with a druzy center showing sparkling white crystals. Whether dyed or natural, I can't say, but it is an outstanding stone, seven millimeters thick with a high polish. I've border wrapped it using five lengths of square sterling wire and given it my signature topper. The sturdy bail will accommodate most chains or a leather cord.

Treat someone special to this one-of-a-kind gift or buy it for yourself.

The pendant measures 2 1/2" from top of bail and is 1 1/4" wide.

Note: Onyx was very popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans. The name comes from the Greek word onux, meaning fingernail. The story is that one day frisky Cupid cut the divine fingernails of Venus with an arrowhead while she was sleeping. He left the clippings scattered on the sand and the fates turned them into stone so that no part of the heavenly body would ever perish.

Onyx is a term used for several stones. It has been dyed since ancient time, with the popular pure black variety, being dyed microcrystalline quartz. Its natural color is usually brown, white or grey. And onyx used in architecture isn't a form of quartz at all, but a type of limestone marble. Onyx is very similar to agate. With straight bands of brown, white or black, where agate has curved bands of many colors. Although regarded as protective, onyx has a reputation as a stone of discord. Onyx was worn to cool the ardors of love, probably because it helps to balance the mind and emotions. Not only avoided by lovers, but also at night, as it provoked nightmares. However, it does improve concentration and devotion, hence many onyx rosaries. Onyx is a strength-giving stone, aiding confidence and useful for athletes or people under stress. Its energy is a mental tonic and can help you cope with fears and worries, making you feel in harmony with your surroundings.

Druzy: Sometimes tiny quartz crystals form within or on top of an stone when water carrying silica is forced into the stone's bed. The word "druzy" refers to this fine layer of miniature crystals filling a cavity or coating a matrix. Many times stones with druzy layerings are treated in such a way to magnify the beauty of the drusy. Many people think of drusy in relation to geodes - but they also form on agates and other stones like onyx, brazilian shadow agates, chrysocolla, ocean jasper, botswana agate, amethyst and rhodochrosite, among many others.
