India Bloodstone Pendant

This designer cut bloodstone combines mossy green with gold and splotches of red in a gorgeous pattern, so nice I had trouble deciding which side to use. It's a thick, flat stone which required six lengths of sterling silver wire. It was cut for me by John and Patti at Blue Heron Gems, one of the last stones I purchased from them. I've border-wrapped it in 21 gauge sterling silver wire with my signature topper. Give this gift to someone special, even if she's not a March birthday girl.

The pendant measures 2 1/8" from top of bail and is 1 1/8" wide.

Note: Bloodstone, green jasper dotted with bright red spots of iron oxide, was treasured in ancient times and served for a long time as the birthstone for March. This attractive chalcedony quartz is also known as heliotrope because in ancient times polished stones were described as reflecting the sun: perhaps the appearance of the gem reminded the ancients of the red setting sun, mirrored in the ocean. It has been used as an aphrodisiac in India and is mined there and in Australia as well as the US.
