India Bloodstone Pendant

This freeform designer cut bloodstone is a mossy green with vibrant red fire--very difficult to photograph to adequately show the beauty of this bevel-edged gemstone. It was cut for me by John and Patti at Blue Heron Gems and is truly stunning. It's a thick stone, needing little embelishment, but requiring six lengths of 21 gauge gold-filled wire. I gave it my signature double swirl topper. Give this gift to someone special, even if she's not a March birthday girl.

The pendant measures 2 3/8" from top of bail and is 1" wide.

Note: Bloodstone, green jasper dotted with bright red spots of iron oxide, was treasured in ancient times and served for a long time as the birthstone for March. This attractive chalcedony quartz is also known as heliotrope because in ancient times polished stones were described as reflecting the sun: perhaps the appearance of the gem reminded the ancients of the red setting sun, mirrored in the ocean. It has been used as an aphrodisiac in India and is mined there and in Australia as well as the US.
