Agate Geode Druzy Pendant

This 24 x 40 millimeter agate geode drusy is actually a slice of a thunderegg. The center is open with a mass of stunning white crystals on each side. It's thick at a full 10 millimeters. Nine strands of 21 gauge sterling wire hold the stone firmly in place and the double swirl topper contributes to the substantial look of this design. A sturdy hidden bail is large enough to accommodate most chains.

Treat someone special to this one-of-a-kind gift or buy it for yourself.

The pendant measures 2 3/4" from top of bail and is 1" wide.

Note: Agate is a form of chalcedony, often banded, that comes in an amazing variety of colors. It forms by filling a cavity in a host rock. Agates are found throughout much of the world; the most famous mining of the mineral in Germany’s Nahe Valley. It was highly valued as a talisman in ancient times and is said to quench thirst and protect from fevers. Ancient Persians used agates to divert storms. Some use agate to achieve success in international trade!

Most agates occur as nodules in ancient volcanic rocks or lava where cavities where filled by silicate and zeolitic minerals deposited in layers upon the walls of the cavity, with the first deposit forming the outer skin of the agate. When the deposition process does not proceed to the point of filling the cavity, a hollow space is left causing a geode (above, right). The interior of the geode can be encrusted with amethyst or quartz crystal. Banding found in Plume Agate, Sagenite, Thunderegg, and Tube Agate is caused by silicate (green) iron oxide or limonite (red), and is referred to as banded agate, riband agate or striped agate.

Thundereggs have a knobby rind of drab, siliceous rock and a cavity filled with agate . From the outside they appear nondescript, but when sawed open and polished they may reveal the most exquisite and colorful designs ranging from five-pointed stars to miniature gardens.
