This is another top-drawer stone, one I purchased recently. It's a large stone, nearly 1 3/4" long with a slightly domed top. The fascinating thing about this stone is the gold and black "big cats" patterning around the perimeter. I pondered how to emphasize this and finally came up with the border wrap you see which is executed in 14 kt. gold fill wire. I emphasized the pattern by creating bands of wire along the sides and bottom, then gave it a simple double swirl topper with tiny gold claws near the neck. A sturdy hidden bail will accommodate most chains.

The finished pendant measures 2 7/8" from top of bail and is 1 1/2" wide.

Note: Utah opal tiffany stone is one of the most beautiful and unusual stones in the world, and one of the most scarce. This stone comes only from one very small area in the Western deserts of Utah, the Brush Wellman beryllium mine. The area is not open to the public for collecting and very little of this material sees anything other than the ore crusher which extracts a very small percentage of beryllium to use in missile nose cones. Tiffany stone, sometimes called Bertrandite, purple opal or ice cream opalite, is composed of predominantly Opalized fluorite (blues, purples and whites), often with many other minerals such as agate, dolomite, rhodonite, manganese oxide and beryllium. It often has a "crackled" appearance. Because of its scarcity, tiffany stone is extremely expensive as well as rare.
