Petrified Wood Opal Designer Pendant

red-line.gif

This stunning designer cab is petrified wood--wood that has literally become stone. This particular stone has a small blue-green quartz deposit that is opalized; the rest of the stone is a mottled red-brown with lovely markings. The cab is quite thick and domed, and has a high polish. I've added a swirly, decorative topper. Enjoy this piece of hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind wearable art.

Treat someone special to this gorgeous pendant or buy it for yourself.

The pendant measures 2 1/8" from top of bail and is 1 1/8" wide.

Note: Wood opal is formed by the replacement of the wood by siliceous material. Ancient forests which became immersed in water containing silicas are the basis of petrified wood. Scientist can still not adequately explain the process. The final product looks like wood but it actually is a stone. The decaying cells of the wood were replaced by the silica and, because each growth ring in any particular tree varies in hardness, decay seems to have taken place at varying rates. The replacement by the silica has been at different times with the result that the wood opal has different colors showing in the same stone. Many people are amazed when they see it.

Petrified wood comes in a rainbow of colors, reflecting the minerals that made it. So a calcified log will be white (unless it's exposed to the browning effects of sunlight). Impurities in the invading mineral influence the color, making no log exactly alike. Iron adds reds and yellows; manganese and copper may create blue or green patches. Crystals of quartz and other minerals make petrified wood glitter. Wood opal is found in many locales including South Dakota, Nevada and Zimbabwe. (Info. courtesy of Mineralgallery.com.)
